The "Highlanders" are born....

Following a quite close team vote, "Highlanders" beat out "The Drunken Monkeys" as our team name. It's a fitting name for our team in a number of ways. As our team was formed based on friendships formed at the various drop-in sessions, beginner, and advanced hockey classes offered at Highland Ice Arena (Shoreline, WA), highlanders just sort of "fits". It pays homage to the arena where we came together, and looking at it from a hockey point of view, "Highlander" conjures up the image of Celtic battlefields, Mel Gibson kicking butt and inspiring an army, and in general a "battle/war" image.

That being said, "The Drunken Monkeys" did come in a close second in the vote. And since we're basically a beginner level hockey team, we didn't want our logo/image to be 100% battle based, so we added a little bit of humor to the logo, reflecting the fun spirit with which we play the game, and getting a little bit of the "Drunken Monkey" into the mix. So, the olive being pierced by a battle sword conveys a message that we hope signifies a war that nobody takes too seriously.
